School Success!

Alex has now been in school for 2 full weeks, and Tyler has been in school for one full week. I can honestly say, the transition into their new school has been easier than I ever imagined. Tyler experienced quite a bit of separation anxiety during summer camp drop offs at his school in Lansdale, so I expected lots of tears at drop off this week. As he often does, Tyler totally surprised me. Mrs. Lahlali, Tyler's teacher, engages him and keeps his interest. The small class size (15 for Ty, and 17 for Alex) along with the fact that each teacher has a teacher's assistant make individual attention feasible. Although Ty's teacher allowed him to have his blankie in his backpack in case he needed it, by Tuesday he announced that he no longer wanted to bring it to school. Hooray!

The school is making a wonderful effort to develop strategies to keep Alex occupied, too. Although ASD does not have a gifted program, Alex's teacher has met with one of the school's principals, who has gifted education experience, to think about ways to enhance Alex's experience. His homework seems to be differentiated with "Challenge" exercises. There will also be a team meeting with teachers, the counselor and our input, similar to a GIEP, to address Alex's needs. So far, I am pleased. Most importantly, Alex is adjusting well, enjoying school, and making friends.

And of course, they look SO handsome in their uniforms!
